Nice - had a similar experience at a local bar and snapped a pic of the key

Should we make a list of Cork WEP keys somewhere ? :)

Maybe we can get James to do a custom Goog Map? Or is there one already that I've forgotten?

I fought through Dublin traffic yesterday to get to Conrad Hotel cos I knew they had free wifi! Also met someone in the Morrison the day before for same reason. The Wifi costs em almost nothing to provide but they get my lunch and dinner business as a result. Pity there aren't more businesses in Ireland who understand that.

I would like WEP for Mahon Centre Food Court nodes.

Exactly Conor, on Monday I posted my frustration with the Carrigaline Court Hotel for ripping me off €5 to use their Wifi when we usually leave €25 behind us at the restaurant anyway. I'll be looking for alternatives next time.

So all you had to do was 'ask' at the Midway Center.... hmmm, now why didn't I think of that. Last time I was there I picked up 4 hotspots but couldn't connect to any. I didn't really have time to browse anyway but next time I'll make it my business to take a prolonged pitstop there. See how this works service folks?

Added your WEP key to the collaborative wifi map -

I've shared a map with you called Irish Wifi hotspots: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid= 112855554048460880778.0004358aea20ba94cba25

    Anyone can contribute, thanks :-)

O'Brien's was even funnier than that. They have the WEP key printed on the receipt but not identified as such. They are obviously trying to limit it to their customers. Subway had a signal too but also locked down.

I'll add the ones I know about to the map.

@topgold I think Mahon Point use Eircom routers. This means if you signed up to Eircom broadband, you also have a WEP key which allows you to sign into these wireless networks around Cork.

Maybe we should setup a database of all Eircom wifi routers and "crack" the WEP keys and post them on the site? ;-)

BTW, there is another wifi network in that Midway place that has no encryption and is wide open...

When I lived in Belgium we build a map of wifi nodes together with the lads behind www.wardrivers.be. Everyone could contribute their Netstumbler files which were translated into a map. If there are people willing to contribute Irish Netstumbler (or WiFiFoFum) files I could do another one...

@EvertB - Couldn't see other networks on N95 from inside O'Briens. But then also had problems getting 3G connection.

Successfully used my free access to Eircom hotspots twice yesterday. Of course the one in Dublin airport was busted, just like everything else in that hellhole.

@eirepreneur How do I add locations to your map?

@evertb it's set to open collaboration so just loging with your gmail ID and off you go, thanks :)

I've edited the Carrigaline Court Hotel 'pin' to change the color from green (free) to yellow (paid). I was thinking red should be used for wifi nodes that are down at time of attempted use? But that's probably over complimicating things ;-p

Nah, don't worry about it, I'm just thinking out loud. It doesn't matter really.

the Mahon password is supposed to be "wireless". Could never get it to work. Douglas court with free wi-fi and its muffin stall is better

How do you color code the pins?

1 year, 5 months ago by shaneymac

  • daverooney

    theres two more ;)

  • EirePreneur

OMG, heading for 70 hotspots... loads more added since yesterday. Thanks everyone! Noticing that about 5 people have generously added their own home nodes to the map and hoping @topgold can follow suit :)

Shane, in order to change the colour of a pin, first make sure you're in edit mode, then click on the pin you want to edit, then the pin icon at top right of the edit bubble to make any change.

If someone can write a tool to import Netstumbler & WiFiFoFum (with GPS coordinates) logfiles I would be able to add a lot more...

  • Evertb

I'll also post it up on the IrishWAN forum. There's plenty of people there sharing their wireless...

Would be great if Eircom either used a Goog Maps or handed over the GEO of all their hotspots.

@conoro As if it would be accurate....

Well, I'll start adding the eircom ones in the Limerick area for which I know the location - http://www.eircom.ie/cgi-bin/bvsm/bveircom/bladerunner/showContent.jsp?BVSessionID=@@@@0976087174.1201187668@@@@&BVEngineID=ccccadedeeleihecefeceiedfgodfik.0&cid=WiFiLocations&site=Res&chanId=-536882378
