A pity that Flickr chose Picnik for photo-editing, they'd have been better off with Pixenate.

We just had a conversation here in Studio Six @ TI on wednesday to that effect, too.

Conor, Thanks for the sentiment. I must admit I felt a pang when I heard the news. It was on the Flickr forums where I "launched" pixenate just over 2 years ago. The early flickr integration was always a showcase of how to integrate Pixenate into websites. The same with the Facebook app. Interesting that flickr will essentially be taking the same approach as Facebook wrt to integrating Picnik - i.e. using an iframe . Good luck to the picnik guys, they've assembled an impressive team and seem to be playing their cards right partnering with flickr and facebook - Looks like there'll be an acquisition bidding war. The flickr/picnik deal validates the need for online photo editing. Flickr are seen as innovators and other photo sites will surely follow. I think we have great technology we have yet to fully exploit and publicize - there's lots of work still to be done.

It brings up the location issue again which I thought a lot about at TC40.

With exactly the same team and product but based on the US west coast (Picnik are Seattle I think), would we be reading about a Flickr-Pixenate deal now?

Loic clearly thought he had to move to make Seesmic a success.

I don't think we could practically move with our family at this stage but I'm keeping a close eye on those who do.

@topgold actually I'm teaching kids trumpet. But we had a big studio six meeting yesterday and it's on my mind.

It may be that it comes down to the location issue but if right was right it would have been Flickr-Pixenate. That's for sure.

@sxoop - have you been pitching Pixenate to Flickr? do they know you exist (without them having to come find you)?

Walter has a nice story about Caterina Fake and Pixenate.

you PV guys are gonna see that a California SV lifestyle sucks when compared to child-friendly Ireland. When I lived in Palo Alto, I could afford only a box closet and a wall-mounted cot.

@topgold - that was the story I was referring to.

    @educast - that's the choice really isn't it? Work-Life balance here or hell-for-leather go-for broke there.

@rgb I did contact caterina by email when I was in SV last summer. I got no response. Personally I think the location thing is a red herring. I think it boils down to contacts and how connected your management team is - true - location might be a factor in this.

Actually that's really what I mean. If your face is visible constantly at events over there then you build your pofile and network. E-mail and IM from here only get you so far.

I hadn't realised how important that was - that was until I moved to London. I'm not sure its the location or access to specific people, but it is about being in the centre of the buzz to let some of that buzz rub off on you.

I think you can create that atmosphere anywhere, you just need the concentration of like-minded people.

Think that's true if you're chasing money. Don't understand the soho thing though. I don't feel more creative in those environments, if anything, less.

Your face is your brand, front and centre a lot of the times, because us humans tend to make decisions on our line of sight more than on a studied review of product features.

@rgb - totally agree about creative atmosphere but for business I think Bernie summarises it perfectly. As soon as you are off the phone talking to a guy in the Valley he has forgotten about you but if he keeps running into you then you become more "sticky".
